1 large navel orange

1 cup water

1 cup sugar



Cut ends off the orange and then slice the orange into 6 equal rounds.  Set aside.


Bring the water and sugar to a simmer in a skillet just large enough to hold the orange rounds in a single layer.  Cover the skillet and cook slowly for 5 minutes.  Uncover and add the slices.


Simmer the slices over low heat turning them every 5 minutes or so until the sugar starts to caramelize.  You will see the liquid start to brown at the edges of the pan.  Turn the heat off and let the slices cool in the syrup.


Transfer to a jar or pie plate for storage in the refrigerator.
